GAA Rounders Preview: Week 5 Fixtures, Predictions and Senior Showdowns

 

Preview – Sunday 17 May 2026

16 matches across Ireland this weekend

How is it Week 5 of the Championship already? The weeks are flying past and already the league tables are starting to indicate who the front runners for titles might be — and who needs to do a bit of work if they want to be in contention.

With one match on Thursday and 16 matches taking place on Sunday, from Limerick and Waterford to Monaghan and many places in between, let’s take a closer look at who will be playing and who we expect to go home on Sunday with a smile on their faces.

Junior Mixed Action in Athenry on Thursday

It’s always great to kick off a weekend of Championship action with a local derby and Thursday evening’s Junior Mixed clash between Athenry and Galway City Rapparees should provide plenty of entertainment.

Athenry’s move into Junior Mixed adds an interesting dynamic to the competition and they will be expecting to make a strong impression. Galway City Rapparees, meanwhile, will feature several new faces, with a number of players having stepped up to the club’s Intermediate Mixed panel.

With both sides capable of putting up big scores, this could turn into an entertaining and high-scoring contest, but Athenry may just have enough experience coming down from Intermediate level to edge it.

Prediction – Athenry.

Gretta Davis will referee the game.

Senior Action in the Midlands

Six Senior clubs will be headed for the centre of the country, with matches taking place in Athlone and Portlaoise from 11.30am.

In The Heath, Carrickmacross Emmets will set up camp and start their day with a Senior Women’s clash with their hosts. Both teams are newly promoted from Intermediate in 2025 and The Heath will be keen to repeat their win in last year’s All-Ireland final, while Carrickmacross will be aiming to stop them doing just that.

Prediction – The Heath; a full-strength home side should just clinch it.

Carrickmacross’ Mixed team is up next and will take on Mayo side Kilmeena at 1pm. Kilmeena have struggled in their two opening games this season, having been defeated by Limekiln and Breaffy, but they’ll be hoping to turn that around and repeat last year’s win over the same opponents. Carrickmacross have also suffered a loss in the opening round of the 2026 season, so the winner on Sunday will be chalking up their first victory of the season.

Prediction – Carrickmacross Emmets; Ulster Final day will give the Monaghan side the added spur to take the win.

The final match of the day in The Heath is the hotly anticipated Men’s clash between reigning Senior Champions Carrickmacross Emmets and rising stars and newly promoted Galway City Rapparees. With one win and one narrow defeat behind them, the Galway men are settling nicely into Senior and look very comfortable in the grade. Carrick’s first outing of 2026 resulted in defeat to Breaffy and they’ll be keen to turn that around and move their way up the league table.

This has the makings of the match of the day and will definitely be recommended viewing for anyone in Portlaoise at 2:30pm on Sunday.

Prediction – Carrickmacross Emmets; the Ulster men’s experience should just give them the edge.

Emo’s Michael Slevin will referee all three games.

An hour up the road in Athlone GAA, two more giants of Senior Rounders will face off in Women’s, Mixed and Men’s games when Mayo’s Breaffy take on Dublin side Limekiln.

Breaffy have been clinical so far this season and have easily brushed aside Carlow side Cúchulainn and Monaghan’s Carrickmacross Emmets, but Limekiln will come ready for battle and won’t be easily intimidated or defeated.

Breaffy’s Women’s team has been a force to be reckoned with for several years now, but will this be the year that they meet their match with the strengthened Limekiln 2026 crew? We should know by lunchtime on Sunday.

Predictions: Senior Women – Limekiln; Senior Men & Mixed – Breaffy.

Philip Keane will be the man in charge for all three matches in Athlone.

Intermediate Women’s Action

Two Intermediate Women’s matches are also up for decision on Sunday in Laois and Roscommon.

In Group A, table toppers Castletown Liam Mellows will be hosted by Emo, who will be hoping that home advantage will give them their first win of the season. Having defeated Inniskeen Grattans and Dublin Metropolitans, the Wexford women will be confident of making it three from three on Sunday and, if Sarah Kavanagh on 2nd Base, Pitcher Mandy Callanan and Catcher Sandra Nugent are on form, it would be hard to predict otherwise.

Glynn Barntown’s Mary Roche will referee in Emo.

Prediction: Castletown Liam Mellows.

The second Intermediate Women’s match of the day will be between local rivals Michael Glavey’s and Elphin. Glavey’s have yet to get their 2026 campaign started and Elphin will be smarting from their 28-6 defeat by a clinical Galway Rapparees two weeks ago, so it’s all to play for.

Elphin’s impressive performances in the 2025 Junior Championship saw them promoted, but is the step up to Intermediate proving too challenging? Have Glavey’s managed to replace their pitcher, Gretta Davis, who has moved to Elphin and will line out on Sunday against her former club?

Prediction: Elphin.

Second up in Michael Glavey’s is a Junior Men Group A game between Elphin and Galway City Rapparees. Elphin haven’t played Junior Men yet this year while Rapparees impressed with a 43-5 annihilation of Sporting Limerick in their first game.

With Home Runs from players on both teams last Sunday, we should hopefully be in for a game of big hitting and great catches.

Prediction: Galway City Rapparees.

GAA Rounders Vice-President Michael Dowling will referee both matches in Roscommon.

Junior Games Round-Up

With several Junior teams setting out on their 2026 campaigns this weekend, the highlights look likely to be in Monaghan, where hosts Inniskeen Grattans will welcome Roscommon’s Kilmore for both Mixed and Women’s games.

Kilmore’s women’s experience looks likely to see them take this one comfortably, while the Mixed game should be a much closer affair with talent and serious skill on both teams.

Predictions: Junior Women – Kilmore; Junior Mixed – Inniskeen Grattans.

Amanda Hoxha will referee both games.

National Secretary Shirley Lennon will be busy on Sunday, starting her day in Nobber where she will referee the Junior Women’s match between first-time team Nobber and Carrickmacross Emmets.

With a very impressive display against Skryne in their first ever Championship match midweek, Nobber will be confident and excited to play, and this could be tighter than might be expected.

Prediction: Carrickmacross’ experience to just sneak them through.

Next up in Nobber is the turn of the Carrickmacross Junior Men to face Carlow’s Myshall. This pairing in 2025 was a cracker of a game with no quarter given by either side, eventually won by Myshall.

This is both sides’ first game of the season so it’s hard to predict which way it might go.

Prediction: Myshall, fresh from their Mixed victory at Junior Day, to take the win.

Following that match, up the road in Dunsany, Shirley will referee her third match of the day in a Junior Mixed game between two brand-new Championship sides, Dunsany and Oulart The Ballagh.

Both clubs had teams in the recent Junior Day so both have that experience under their belt. Oulart The Ballagh made it to the Shield Final, quite the achievement for a brand-new club, and will hope that experience will stand to them after their long drive to Meath.

Prediction: Oulart The Ballagh.

Two further Junior games will take place in Limerick and Waterford on Sunday morning.

Junior Women’s sides Knockainey and Kildimo Pallaskenry will play a Limerick derby — one of many this season — while in Waterford City, local side Naomh Pól will take on Carlow’s Leighlinbridge, who enjoyed two successes last Sunday in their first foray into the Mixed Championship.

Predictions: Kildimo Pallaskenry and Leighlinbridge.

We’re still building up to our crazy and insanely busy summer Sundays in June and July, but this weekend looks set to provide some great matches, some interesting introductions to the All-Ireland competition and, if the past four weeks are anything to go by, some unexpected results.

🌟 2025 Intermediate All-Star Nominees Announced

The nominees for the 2025 GAA Rounders Intermediate All-Star Awards have been revealed, recognising the top performers from the closing stages of this year’s Intermediate Championships.

Selections are based on performances across the final few games of the season, highlighting players who delivered when it mattered most.

🏆 Winners will be announced next Tuesday at 7:30pm, with all trophies presented at the All-Stars Night on Saturday, 1st November.

We have our first confirmed All-Star for a club — with all three nominees in the Mixed Female category coming from Erne Eagles. It’s a remarkable reflection of their strength and consistency at Intermediate level this season.

There’s also a unique story within the nominations, as husband and wife duo Justin and Emma Perrin have both been shortlisted for All-Stars — Justin in the Mixed Male category and Emma in the Mixed Female list — marking an incredible shared achievement for the Cavan-based club.

Darryl Dolan: “Enough hard work will take you anywhere”

Darryl Dolan: “Enough hard work will take you anywhere”

There’s no hesitation when Darryl Dolan is asked about the greatest ever player.

If it’s a question of the Greatest, then Dolan doesn’t hesitate. “I’m going Damien McArdle,” he says. “He just wasn’t a power hitter for a home run. Damien has 15 men’s titles, 9 All-Stars. Retired for almost a decade in the middle and had 4 All-Ireland titles before the All-Stars were introduced — so really he should have about 15.”

He pauses only briefly before adding another name that rarely comes up. “Mick Cullen always gets forgotten about in big conversations because of the lack of All-Star accolades, but many years he’s been the best or one of the best players on the field in nearly every game.”

When it comes to memories, Dolan refuses to single just one out. “Really can’t single out a single one,” he admits, “but getting to share the field with some of the legends I watched train and play. And then the 2024 season was special as a new-look Eagles team after losing so many familiar faces. To see Fionn get man of the match and hoisted in the air after years of watching us play without an underage team — to see it reward him for his work — that was special.”

For Dolan, Erne Eagles is more than a club. “Home. It has been my home away from home and my club mates like family. Even when there’s disagreements 🤣 there’s always someone there if you need anything. And when everyone is there at an event, it feels like one big family reunion.”

He is quick to point towards the next generation. “So many to say at the underage brackets, I could name one in each team and the potential of them is almost limitless, just depends how far they push themselves — Adam, Alice, Aoibhe, Louis, I could go on and on. For the young players coming into senior this year? I’ll have to say Fainche Higgins has really made her mark on the game.”

The battles, he says, come in cycles. “It has come in waves and each year different teams. In men’s it was The Heath and then it transitioned to Carrickmacross. In the mixed, I’d have to say the battles with Glynn Barntown have been epic.”

But asked if any player ever truly dominated Erne, he’s dismissive. “No. I feel like we always adapt and we can ‘figure out’ players and adapt to them, so someone might be good on a day against us but we’ll be ready for them the next day.”

The greatest comeback? He doesn’t hesitate. “Too many to count — 2018 men’s final, 2019 final, the 2020 mixed final. But I’ll probably have to go with the 2021 mixed semi-final against Glynn Barntown. It was the greatest comeback I’ve ever witnessed.”

As for the toughest opponent? “Probably Ruairí Tracey, because we’ve gone head to head since underage so many times and I only ever got the better of him in senior. Now it’s the other lads on the team fighting to get a place 😅.”

He is quick to credit Carrickmacross too. “Without a doubt, the way they gradually learned, watched, and improved over the years. Starting slow and growing is very impressive and a lot of clubs could learn from them.”

And despite his own reputation, Dolan keeps returning to his teammates. “That I’m very lucky to have the teammates I have. They put up with me and temper me — trying to funnel my passion and energy for the game while making it enjoyable for others at the same time.”

Rounders has given him more than medals. “There’s something outside of Rounders??? Ah, I think coaching and teaching has been very interchangeable on and off the field, but the sport has definitely helped me hone those skills for other aspects of my life.”

For the younger players coming through, the advice is simple. “Just keep working hard and practice. Enough hard work will take you anywhere. Just because someone isn’t naturally gifted from the start doesn’t mean they can’t leave others in the dust with enough work.”

And if you ask him who the best nine he played with or against? “I am working on list,  I’ll send it on soon.”

Galway City Rapparees vs St Clares (Cavan)

Intermediate Men’s Semi-Final

Galway City Rapparees head into the semi-finals as group winners with three wins from four and a +24 run difference.
Their standout display came against St Clares in July when they blasted 25 runs in just two innings —
ruthless batting that left no way back.

The Rapparees have married explosive hitting with disciplined defence all season. Their only setback was a one‑run loss
to Emo, 26–25 (5), showing they can be pushed but are rarely overwhelmed.

St Clares battled into the last four with key wins, including 20–4 (5) over Dublin Metropolitans.
They can post big numbers, but they must be far tighter in the field to avoid a repeat of that heavy defeat to Galway.

Prediction: Galway City Rapparees — likely to take control early if they find rhythm.

Kilmeena (Mayo) vs Emo (Laois)

Intermediate Men’s Semi-Final

Kilmeena racked up 92 runs in four games, finishing joint‑top on points with the best run difference in the group (+42).
Their only meeting with Emo ended 34–18 (3) in Kilmeena’s favour.

That result comes with an asterisk — Emo had only eight players available and were severely under strength.
At full complement they’re a different proposition, as shown by their 26–25 (5) win over Galway City Rapparees.

Kilmeena’s power hitting and solid fielding make them favourites, but they’ll be wary of a near‑full‑strength Emo with a point to prove.

Prediction: Kilmeena — margin shrinks if Emo start fast.

Intermediate Mixed Semi-Finals

Date: Sunday, 17 August 2025  |  Venue: Dunganny  |  Throw-in: 2pm

Emo (Laois) vs Galway City Rapparees

Intermediate Mixed Semi-Final

Emo swept Group B unbeaten with a massive +59 run difference and three statement wins:
29–7 vs Na Fianna (4), 37–17 at Glynn Barntown (5), and 40–23 at Raheen (4).
They score in bursts and rarely let opponents settle.

Galway City Rapparees finished level on points with Erne in Group A, edged to second only on run rate.
Highlights included 17–10 vs St Clares (3) and a composed 6–2 away at Michael Glaveys (4).
Their 12–19 defeat to Erne came while under strength, so it’s a poor guide to their ceiling.

If Galway are full strength, their defence can slow Emo’s early surge — but they’ll need a fast start to avoid a chase.

Prediction: Emo

Erne Eagles (Cavan) vs Raheen (Wexford)

Intermediate Mixed Semi-Final

Erne topped Group A on run rate with three wins. Their headline result was a 22–20 over St Clares despite batting only
(3) innings, plus a 19–12 against Rapparees on the day Galway were short-handed.
The sole slip was 16–19 to Michael Glaveys (4).

Raheen finished second in Group B and showed steel in a 16–14 away win at Glynn Barntown (4).
Even versus Emo they posted 23, so they can score if the game opens up.

Eagles have the edge for power and experience, but Raheen’s knack for tight finishes keeps this live deep into the game.

Prediction: Erne Eagles

Intermediate Ladies Championship Semi-Finals

Date: Sunday, 17 August 2025  |  Venue: Dunganny  |  Throw-in: 4pm

Carrickmacross Emmets (Monaghan) vs Michael Glaveys (Roscommon)

Intermediate Ladies Semi-Final

Carrickmacross Emmets arrive as unbeaten group winners, pairing deep batting with sharp infield work.
Glaveys have shown resilience in tight games and will try to keep this low-scoring and error‑free.

If Emmets settle early, their scoring pressure should tell; Glaveys need a fast start and tidy fielding to stay in range.

Prediction: Carrickmacross Emmets

The Heath (Laois) vs Glynn Barntown (Wexford)

Intermediate Ladies Semi-Final

The Heath have been consistent all season, combining disciplined batting with a well‑organised defence.
Glynn Barntown bring more attacking punch and can rack up runs quickly when the order clicks.

Expect a tight contest: The Heath’s structure versus Glynn’s scoring bursts.

Prediction: Heath

GAA Rounders Senior Previews – Semi-Finals order to be decided


Sunday, 10th August 2025 – Mullahoran GAA, Tymon & Athlone

Senior Men – Erne Eagles vs Carrickmacross Emmets

📍 Mullahoran GAA 12:30 Ref – Jack

Carrickmacross Emmets come into this one unbeaten, holding a perfect 6–0 record and an impressive +75 run difference. They’ve scored a massive 111 runs in just six games, showing they have the firepower to put teams away quickly.

Erne Eagles (5–0–1) have also been strong this season, but their scoring output — 70 runs — is notably lower. That means they’ll need to be clinical with every opportunity they get. Last week’s surprise to many defeat to Breaffy will still be fresh in their minds, and you get the feeling they’ll be well up for this one.

With top spot in the group still not certain, this has all the makings of a cracking match with plenty of niggle. But with both into semi-final it’s not as important to either team.

Prediction: Carrickmacross Emmets by 6–8 runs.

Senior Mixed – Erne Eagles vs Carrickmacross Emmets

📍 Mullahoran GAA 2pm Ref – Jack

Carrickmacross are barely in contention. By my calculations, they would need to beat Erne Eagles by something in the region of 27 runs to overtake Cuchulainn, which is a tall order. It’s another group where run rate is going to be vital in deciding the placings. Still, it shows that even when results haven’t gone your way, there’s always something left to fight for.

Erne Eagles are joint-top on points with Glynn Barntown and Breaffy, sitting at 5–0–1 with a +34 run difference. Carrickmacross (2–0–4) have found life tough against the top-tier sides, while the Eagles’ defensive record — just 49 runs conceded — speaks for itself.

Prediction: Erne Eagles by 10–12 runs with innings to spare, with Carrick unlikely to have much interest in chasing a big margin late on.

Senior Ladies – Glynn Barntown vs Breaffy

📍 Athlone – 12:30

This is a huge clash between two unbeaten sides in the Senior Ladies championship. Glynn Barntown have been rock-solid defensively, conceding only 15 runs in three games, while Breaffy boast the more explosive attack, scoring 42 runs in the same number of matches.

With top spot and valuable momentum ahead of the finals at stake, this could easily go down to the last inning.

Prediction: Low-scoring draw.

Senior Mixed – Glynn Barntown vs Breaffy

📍 Athlone – 14:00

Another heavyweight showdown in the Senior Mixed, with both sides sitting at 5–0–1 and averaging over 13 runs per game. Breaffy’s +41 run difference edges Glynn’s +34, but there’s little to separate these two on paper. Expect an attacking, high-scoring classic.

Prediction: Breaffy by 2–3 runs.

Senior Mixed – Limekiln vs The Heath

📍 Tymon Park – 14:00

Limekiln and The Heath are both 1–0–5 and fighting to avoid the wooden spoon. The Heath have conceded the most runs in the league (96) and will need to tighten up considerably to compete here. Limekiln’s slightly better scoring record (47 runs) could prove decisive.

Prediction: Limekiln by 10–12 runs.

Senior Men – Glynn Barntown vs Breaffy

📍 Athlone – 15:30

Breaffy (5–0–1) are the league’s second-best attacking side, with 104 runs scored, while Glynn Barntown (4–0–2) have been one of the more disciplined defensive outfits. Breaffy’s power hitters could prove the difference, but Glynn have enough resilience to keep it close for most of the contest. I’ve just got a sneaky feeling that Glynn Barntown are being underestimated and could be the surprise package of the senior men’s.

Prediction: Glynn Barntown by 4-5 runs.

Crunch Time: Key Fixtures Set to Shape the Championship This Sunday

📅 Sunday’s Championship Action

All eyes turn to Athlone, Tymon Park, and Mullahoran this Sunday as the Rounders Championship edges closer to the knockout stages.
 
With games running out, every result now carries weight — whether it’s for top spot, survival, or momentum. Breaffy’s Senior squads return to action aiming to extend their unbeaten runs, while Cuchulainn, Kilmeena, and Erne Eagles look to shake up the standings. It’s also a big day for the intermediate championship in Galway. Run rates, head-to-heads, and weather could all come into play.
 

Senior Ladies

Breaffy vs Cuchulainn 📍Athlone GAA | 🕧 12:30pm | 🧍‍♂️Ref: Jack All eyes will be on Athlone as defending All-Ireland champions Breaffy return to action for just their second match of the campaign. The Mayo side have lifted the last three national titles and opened their 2025 account with a dominant 15–1 win over Raheen, showcasing their depth, power, and ruthless streak.

Cuchulainn, meanwhile, have already played three matches, narrowly beating Raheen and losing tight encounters to both Erne Eagles (30–34) and Glynn Barntown (7–15). Despite sitting second in the table, their run rate is negative—an issue they’ll need to address quickly. Last year’s meeting between these two sides was a cracker, and Cuchulainn pushed Breaffy hard before ultimately falling short.

With scoring difference and final placings still on the line, Cuchulainn will be desperate to cause an upset. But they’ll need to produce their most disciplined performance yet to overcome a Breaffy team that knows how to finish games with precision.

Senior Mixed

Breaffy vs Cuchulainn 📍Athlone GAA | 🕑 2:00pm | 🧍‍♂️Ref: Jack

 

It’s a heavyweight clash as reigning All-Ireland champions Breaffy face high-flying Cuchulainn in a game that could define the top of the table. Breaffy may be sitting in sixth due to games in hand, but with a perfect 3–0 record and the best run rate in the group (+2.7), they’re still the team to beat.

Cuchulainn, meanwhile, have racked up some serious scores and sit second with three wins from five. Their recent 24–21 victory over The Heath showed their threat with the bat, but their defence will be tested by a ruthless Breaffy side. A win here for Breaffy keeps their title defence firmly on track. Cuchulainn will be out to prove they belong in that top bracket.

Erne Eagles look sharper, more consistent, and better equipped to handle pressure. The Heath will need to pull something special out of the bag to avoid slipping further down the table.

Two teams with 1–4 records, 17 points each, and almost nothing between them. This is make-or-break. Limekiln have been involved in multiple close games but struggled to close them out.

Kilmeena, meanwhile, got a huge morale boost last round with a shock 9–7 win over Glynn Barntown. This is the first time the two sides meet in senior championship action—and it’s a true knockout scenario. The winner stays alive in the semi-final hunt. The loser almost certainly exits.

Carrickmacross are bottom of the table but showed huge improvement in their last outing with a 22–16 win over The Heath. They’ll be hoping to carry that form into this one and pull off another upset.

Kilmeena play earlier in the day against Limekiln, and the quick turnaround could challenge their depth and stamina. If they win the first, this becomes a must-win. If they lose it, this becomes a lifeline. Carrickmacross are fresh and finally finding their rhythm—Kilmeena could be caught cold late in the day.

Senior Men

Breaffy vs Cuchulainn 📍Athlone GAA | 🕞 3:30pm | 🧍‍♂️Ref: Jack

Last year’s beaten finalists Breaffy are on a mission—and they’re doing it with style. Unbeaten in three, they boast a staggering +4.3 run rate, having brushed aside the likes of Michael Glavey’s (31–6) and Limekiln (21–11). Sitting just outside the top four due to games played, a win here would put them firmly back in the picture for top spot.

Cuchulainn are fourth, but their path is anything but secure. With losses to Erne Eagles and Glynn Barntown on their record, they’ll need something special to hold off the chasing pack. Their 2-run win over The Heath earlier in the season showed grit, but they’ll need much more to stop a Breaffy side in full flow. Cuchulainn are fighting to stay in the hunt so expect intensity.

Limekiln vs Michael Glavey’s 📍Tymon Park | 🕧 12:30pm | 🧍‍♀️Ref: Sarah After conceding two walkovers in a row, Michael Glavey’s are set to line out again—but they’ll need to rediscover their form quickly. Bottom of the table with –9 points and a –4.2 run rate, their season has unravelled fast. But if they can put in a full performance, they could at least restore some pride. Limekiln haven’t had the season they hoped for either. Just one win from five has them stuck on 17 points, and while qualification nearly is now out of reach, a win here would ensure they finish the campaign on a high. Both sides are wounded. One will leave with a much-needed boost.

Intermediate Mixed

Last year’s Junior champions Galway City Rapparees have stormed into Intermediate mixed with real intent, boasting two wins from two and the best run rate in the group (+2.4). A third win here would seal qualification and set up a winner-takes-all clash with Erne Eagles for top spot in early August.

St. Clare’s were unbeaten until they ran into an on-fire Erne Eagles side. They still sit second on 13 points, but their fate now hinges on this trip to Galway. A big win could book their place in the semis. A loss, and they will most likely be leapfrogged by both Galway and Erne. This is effectively a knockout game for St Clare’s . Expect fireworks in Galway.

After a slow start, Erne Eagles are suddenly back in the mix. A commanding win over St. Clare’s has boosted their confidence and run rate—and if they beat Athenry here, they’ll leap to 14 points and set up a massive final game with Galway.

Athenry have been competitive, but a leaky defence (conceding 62 runs) has cost them. Even with three games played, they’re out of the running—but they’d love to spoil Erne’s charge and grab a statement win at home. Erne need this to stay alive. Expect them to show up.

Intermediate men 

🔵 Galway City Rapparees vs St Clare’s 📍 Galway | 🕑 2:00pm | 🧍‍♀️ Referee: Shirley

It’s a high-stakes finish in the Intermediate Men’s group as Galway City Rapparees take on St Clare’s, with top spot and semi-final pairings hanging in the balance. The Rapparees have turned things around brilliantly in 2025. After failing to win a single game last year—including a heavy defeat to St Clare’s in this corresponding fixture—they’ve emerged as one of the form teams of this season. A statement win over Kilmeena and a dominant performance against the Dublin Mets show just how far they’ve come. Their only blemish was a one-run loss to Emo in a thriller.

St Clare’s have also secured their semi-final place after seeing off the Mets and holding a valuable head-to-head edge over them. However, inconsistency has been an issue, with defeats to both Kilmeena and Emo. A win here could lift them as high as second depending on run rate, while a loss would likely see them finish fourth.

For Galway, it’s simple: win and they top the group. Lose, and they risk dropping to third—setting up a rematch with Clare’s in the semi-final. A full-circle showdown either way.

Junior Men

Galway City Rapparees vs St Senans 📍 Galway | 🕜 Throw-in 11am Junior Men – Group A

It all comes down to this for Galway City Rapparees, who host St Senans in the final game of Group A. But despite still being mathematically alive, the odds are stacked against them in a brutal run rate scenario that may yet punish one of the form teams of the group.

Galway come into this clash with 16 points and a run rate of –0.4, having won two of their four matches and received a walkover win against Elphin—crucially, walkovers carry no run rate gain.

St Senans, by contrast, sit on 18 points with a run rate of 2.1, and have already beaten Na Piarsaigh and Sporting Limerick convincingly. Even in last week’s narrow defeat to Kilmore (16–15), they showed they could mix it with the best. The Rapparees are now in the unenviable position of needing to beat St Senans by around 30 runs to leapfrog them and Na Pairsaigh on run rate. A win by 9 or 10 would have been enough in a normal situation, but the lack of a run rate boost from their walkover against Elphin means Galway are carrying a deficit both mathematically and psychologically.

To make matters even more frustrating, Galway already beat Kilmore, who are top finishers in the group, earlier in the campaign. If they manage to beat St Senans here, they could beat both of the group’s top qualifiers—but could still finish fourth and miss out on the semis. That would be an extraordinary and rare outcome in a six-team group format in rounders.

St Senans, with their current run rate cushion, can afford a close loss and still go through. Their 18(2)-10(5) win over Elphin earlier in the campaign did wonders for their run rate.

Expect Galway to come out swinging—they’ve no choice. For St Senans, this is all about scoreboard management. Even a loss could be enough… just as long as it’s not historic.

Raheen are still searching for their first win, but they at least batted five in their last outing against Carrickmacross (4–18), considering they only had seven starting – that’s quite an achievement. They’ll fancy their chances at home, but they must tighten up defensively – they’ve conceded 18 and 13 in recent matches.

• Cuchulainn: W vs Glavey’s, L vs Glynn Barntown, L vs Breaffy

Verdict:
Raheen to use home advantage and field their strongest team of the season and get the win.

This is a crunch tie for both sides. Limekiln have completed their four matches and sit on 14 points – they need results elsewhere to go their way. Glynn Barntown, on the other hand, have a game in hand and could leapfrog Limekiln on games won. They lost narrowly to Erne Eagles but bounced back well to beat Cuchulainn (11–7). Home advantage might be key.

• Limekiln: L vs Erne Eagles, W vs Cuchulainn

Verdict:
A true four-pointer – Barntown’s home pitch might just swing it.

Preview:
A tough task ahead for Glavey’s. They’ve been on the wrong end of some heavy defeats, including a 1–17 loss to Carrickmacross and 2–9 to Cuchulainn. Erne Eagles, unbeaten with three wins from three, are hitting form at the right time. They saw off Glynn Barntown 9–5 and dominated Limekiln 14–5. Expect them to keep the pressure on top spot.

Both teams come into this clash knowing that a win keeps them in the race for the knockouts, while a loss could all but end their season.
Cuchulainn have suffered two narrow defeats so far – a 15–7 loss to Glynn Barntown and a remarkable 34–30 shootout with Erne Eagles that turned into one of the highest-scoring games in the competition’s history.

Raheen have only played once and were well beaten by Breaffy (1–15), but they’ll hope home soil gives them the spark needed to kickstart their season.
They’ve shown flashes of potential, but they’ll need to contain the aggressive Cuchulainn batters, who have posted a combined 37 runs in just two matches.

Form:

  • Raheen: L vs Breaffy (1–15)
  • Cuchulainn: L vs Glynn Barntown (7–15), L vs Erne Eagles (30–34)

Verdict:

If Raheen can field a full side and get their defence working, they’ll make a contest of this. But on scoring form alone, Cuchulainn’s firepower gives them the edge – especially with playoff points at stake. Expect another high-scoring battle.

Preview:
Carrickmacross are bottom of the table after narrow losses to Limekiln and Glynn Barntown. But they’ve batted well in patches and are improving game by game. The Heath, meanwhile, have a win and a loss – including a hard-fought win over Kilmeena and a heavy loss to Breaffy last time out. This is a must-win for both teams if they want to keep semi-final hopes alive.

Form:
• Carrickmacross: L vs Glynn Barntown (5–12), L vs Limekiln (6–7)
• The Heath: W vs Kilmeena, L vs Breaffy (4–11)

Verdict:
This will be a close encounter but Carrickmacross should get their first win of the campaign by a narrow margin.

Preview:
One of the biggest clashes of the round. Glynn Barntown are unbeaten with three wins from three and sit just one point off top. Limekiln have already played four and need this one to have a chance of finishing in the top four. Glynn’s defence has been rock solid, while Limekiln have conceded 42 in four games – they’ll need a big turnaround.

Form:
• Glynn Barntown: W vs Erne Eagles (10–6), W vs Carrickmacross (12–5), W vs Cuchulainn (22–17)

Barntown to win and potentially go top – but they’ll be made work for it.

Erne Eagles have found form after an opening-day loss to Glynn Barntown and have put up big scores in wins over Limekiln and The Heath. This could be a tough afternoon if the Eagles get going early, but don’t underestimate Kilmeena who will be well up for this home game.

Preview: This could easily be this years All-Ireland final pairing, Table-toppers Kilmeena have been unstoppable so far – three wins from three and 82 runs scored in the process. They’ve already racked up big wins over St. Clare’s, Emo, and Dublin Mets, with a +53 run difference and 15 points to show for it.

The Galway City Rapparees are a much tougher test, though. They ran Emo close (25–26) when they were severely under strength and hammered Dublin Mets (20–6). A win here would put them firmly in the conversation for top spot.

Form:
• Kilmeena: W vs Dublin (30–8), W vs St Clare’s (22–15), W vs Emo (30–6)
• Rapparees: W vs Dublin (20–6), L vs Emo (25–26)

Verdict:
Kilmeena are favourites, but this is their biggest test yet. Expect a high-scoring thriller – edge to Kilmeena by a couple of runs.

🏟️ St. Clare’s vs Dublin Metropolitans

Preview:
Dublin Metropolitans have been wildly inconsistent – they stunned Emo in Round 1 but were hammered by Kilmeena and outclassed by the Rapparees. A lot of their performance depends on how well their bowler settles early in the game.

St. Clare’s have only played once so far – a spirited loss to Kilmeena (15–22) – and will be eager to make a statement at home. If they can avoid early errors, they’re more than capable of controlling this game.

Form:
• St. Clare’s: L vs Kilmeena (15–22)
• Dublin: W vs Emo (19–14), L vs Rapparees (6–20), L vs Kilmeena (8–30)

Verdict:
St. Clare’s should take this one. Dublin Met’s chances will hinge on their bowler’s control and rhythm, but the hosts look more settled.

Carrickmacross are the standout team in the group – five wins from five, 89 runs scored, and already qualified. But don’t expect them to ease off. They’re a well-balanced side, and they’ll want to maintain momentum heading into the knockout stages.

The Heath, though, have been quietly impressive – two wins from two, including a 27–25 thriller against Kilmeena. If they pull off another upset here, they’ll announce themselves as serious contenders.

Verdict:
Carrick look too strong – but The Heath will push them all the way.

Preview:
Kilmeena need the win to keep their top-four hopes alive. They’ve posted massive scores this season – 95 runs in total – but they’ve also leaked 76, including heavy losses to The Heath and Carrickmacross. Galway City Rapparees, meanwhile, are out of form but not out of fight. They’ve been boosted by the return of some key players this week and could be a very different proposition.

Verdict:
Kilmeena should take it – but Galway could snatch an unlikely win if their returning players click. 

🏟️ Emo vs Michael Glavey’s

Preview:
This one is vital for both. Glavey’s are in the top four on 16 points, but with Carrickmacross and Kilmeena already ahead, they need to win to stay in the mix. Emo are just two points behind and have been wildly unpredictable – beaten heavily by Carrickmacross but competitive in others. This will come down to who makes fewer errors in the early innings but Emo are a completely different team at home and should have enough fire power.

 

Verdict:
If this game was in Michael Glavey’s, you would fancy them to win,  but Emo are a different team at home and should  just about edge it.

🏟️ St. Clare’s vs Athenry

Preview:
With only the top two in the group qualifying for the semi-finals, this clash carries huge weight. Both sides have ground to make up — and defeat here could all but end a team’s season.

St. Clare’s looked strong early on, edging out Michael Glavey’s,  but had a heavy defeat against Erne Eagles despite how close it looked on the scoreboard 22–20. They’re consistent and well-structured, with a balanced attack and a sharp infield.

Athenry, despite sitting on two losses, have shown real grit. They came within two runs of beating Michael Glavey’s (15–13) and have improved defensively since their earlier loss to Galway City Rapparees. They’ll know a win puts them right back in the mix — but a loss likely ends their hopes and puts them in relegation danger.

Verdict: St. Clare’s have the edge on form and structure, but Athenry won’t go quietly. Clare’s to take it — just.

🟡 Group D – Junior Ladies Championship

Leighlinbridge have secured a top two in the group and will qualify for the knockout stages if they turn up on Sunday. A win over Kilaneran earlier in the group shows they can mix it with anyone, but falling short against Castletown Liam Mellows means they’re still learning. The big result was their 34–8 demolition of Ferns which gives them hope in the run rate department.

Castletown Liam Mellows are already safely through after three impressive wins, including that 10-run victory over Leighlinbridge. Kilaneran sit level on points but are finished their games, and having lost to Leighlinbridge and drawn with Glynn Barntown, they may get edged out on head-to-head or run rate.

This is Glynn Barntown third ladies team, which in itself is a phenomenal achievement. They’ll finish out their campaign against Leighlinbridge – and while silverware might not be on the cards, the Wexford outfit have already won in numbers. Leighlinbridge may not lift the trophy this year – but when it comes to social media presence, they’re head and shoulders above the rest.
