GAA Rounders Remembers Liam O’Neill

We were saddened to hear of the death of former GAA President Liam O’Neill. The Laois native was Úachtarán CLG for a term from 2012 to 2015 and is credited with having ushered in a new era of the GAA which included the introduction of the Black Card to Gaelic football, the HawkEye system and the beginning of the discussions around integration of the LGFA and Camogie Association as well as the Football Review Committee.

From a Rounders perspective, Mr O’Neill was a great supporter of our code and was responsible for the purchase of Rounders bats for circulation all over the country. He saw the positive contribution our game could offer to the wider GAA community and was a passionate promoter of Rounders as an addition to all GAA clubs. As President of the GAA, he promoted our sport in a way not done before and GAA Rounders owes him a debt of gratitude.

In 2016 the GAA launched a Strategic Plan for Rounders and Liam O’Neill, at the time, said that “This is a fantastic opportunity to provide a boost to the great game of Rounders and I congratulate everyone who has been involved in bringing the project to this stage. I have said consistently since the start of my tenure that the future for our games lies in broadening their appeal to all members of the family and there is no better code to facilitate this than Rounders. Everyone can play this game.”

GAA Rounders extends our sympathy to Liam’s wife Áine, his children Caoimhe, Ciarán and Clíodhna and his extended family and friends.

GAA Rounders Shine at GAA Youth Forum in Croke Park

Date: Saturday, 1 November 2025  |  Venue: Croke Park GAA Rounders enjoyed a brilliant day at the GAA Youth Forum, meeting hundreds of young people and showcasing the skill, fun, and inclusivity at the heart of the game. From first whistle to last, our stand was buzzing.

Huge credit to Craig Davis , Aidan Lynskey & Matt Kelly, who were on the stand all day—coaching throws and catches, answering questions, and keeping spirits high. They spoke with hundreds of young people eager to try Rounders, start school teams, or bring the game back to their clubs.

What the Youth Forum Delivered

  • Interactive workshops on decision-making, resilience, empathy, and volunteering.
  • Panel discussions featuring association presidents and players across the codes.
  • GAA Youth Congress—debates and proposals that will inform the GAA Youth Committee report to Congress 2026.
Rounders stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the LGFA, Handball, and the Camogie Association—another sign of our sport’s growing profile in the wider GAA family.

Here’s the plan for the next couple of weeks as we move towards the All-Stars and Club of the Year awards.

🗓 Tuesday, 7th October

  • Voting forms for the Senior, Intermediate, Junior, and Overall Club of the Year will be circulated.
  • Please return completed forms by Friday, 10th October.
  • Announcement of Ladies, Mixed, and Men’s Junior All-Star nominees – 7pm.

🗓 Wednesday, 8th October

  • Announcement of Ladies, Mixed, and Men’s Intermediate All-Star nominees – 7pm.

🗓 Thursday, 9th October

  • The Senior All-Star nominees will be revealed live on YouTube from 7:30pm.
  • All Senior nominations will be posted here at 8:30pm.

🗓 Monday, 13th October

  • Winners of the Ladies, Mixed, and Men’s Junior All-Star awards will be announced.

🗓 Tuesday, 14th October

  • Winners of the Ladies, Mixed, and Men’s Intermediate All-Star awards will be announced.

🗓 Wednesday, 15th October

  • Announcement of the Senior, Intermediate, and Junior Club of the Year awards.

🗓 Thursday, 16th October

  • Expect the 250 tickets to the All-Stars to be sold out.

🏆 Saturday, 18th October

  • Connacht Cup Finals

🌟 Saturday, 1st November

  • Presentation evening for the Senior All-Star winners and the Overall Club of the Year winner, along with all previously announced award winners.
