GAA Rounders Remembers Liam O'Neill

We were saddened to hear of the death of former GAA President Liam O’Neill. The Laois native was Úachtarán CLG for a term from 2012 to 2015 and is credited with having ushered in a new era of the GAA which included the introduction of the Black Card to Gaelic football, the HawkEye system and the beginning of the discussions around integration of the LGFA and Camogie Association as well as the Football Review Committee.

From a Rounders perspective, Mr O’Neill was a great supporter of our code and was responsible for the purchase of Rounders bats for circulation all over the country. He saw the positive contribution our game could offer to the wider GAA community and was a passionate promoter of Rounders as an addition to all GAA clubs. As President of the GAA, he promoted our sport in a way not done before and GAA Rounders owes him a debt of gratitude.

In 2016 the GAA launched a Strategic Plan for Rounders and Liam O’Neill, at the time, said that “This is a fantastic opportunity to provide a boost to the great game of Rounders and I congratulate everyone who has been involved in bringing the project to this stage. I have said consistently since the start of my tenure that the future for our games lies in broadening their appeal to all members of the family and there is no better code to facilitate this than Rounders. Everyone can play this game.”
