Club Focus: How Galway City Rapparees Built a Club from the Ground Up

Club Focus: Galway City Rapparees’ Five-Year Surge to Five Semi-Finals

Rounders thrives on feel-good stories, inspiring anecdotes and tales of rapid growth, but the trajectory of Galway City Rapparees over the past five years stands out as one of the most remarkable developments in recent seasons.

From initial conversations in late 2021 about transitioning from softball to fielding teams in five All-Ireland semi-finals in August 2026, the club’s progress reflects strategic vision, community spirit and immense work behind the scenes.

Founded by Joe Naughton, Eoin Wood, Gavin Mulhall and Tomás Kenny, Galway City Rapparees has expanded from an initial roster of 14 players to more than 50 registered members.

Since entering a single Men’s team at the 2021 Junior Day, the club has grown to field five teams across Junior, Intermediate and Senior grades in Men’s, Women’s and Mixed competitions, collecting two All-Ireland titles, three All-Stars and numerous regional honours along the way.

That debut outing at the 2021 Junior Day – and winning their first title – in Tymon Park laid the foundation for the club’s current Senior Men’s setup, who contest their All-Ireland semi-final in Monaghan on 16 August.

Core players such as Cathal Creavan, Ryan Dennis, Jay Hall, Tomás Kenny, Pakie Killilea and Rory McGarvey have transitioned from newcomers to established Senior performers.

Strengthened by players like Tomás Callanan, Dave Gannon, Ajay Kumar, Greg Mannion, Vishal Pathare, and Ili Tuimauga, the unit has proved in its debut Senior season that it belongs among the top four Men’s sides in the country.

At Intermediate level, Rapparees field both Women’s and Mixed teams in 2026.

The club’s sole dedicated Women’s squad reached the Junior All-Ireland Final in 2024 before earning promotion to Intermediate for 2025. Currently managed by Rory McGarvey, the team navigated a steep learning curve last year before going unbeaten in their 2026 group.

They now face 2025 Junior champions Inniskeen Grattans in the All-Ireland semi-final on 15 August. The panel features long-standing members Edel Brennan, Cat Carty, Mel Mannion, Clodagh Naughton, Jenna O’Brien, Jessie Pereira, Laura Salvatore and Alex Stewart, alongside softball recruits Hazel Kilduff and Katie Jessop.

Intermediate Mixed

Drawing players from both higher-grade panels, the Mixed side also enters the knockout stages unbeaten. They meet Dublin Metropolitans in their All-Ireland semi-final on 15 August, looking to build on an impressive group campaign where they overcame some tough teams earlier in the season.

Hosting

All six GAA Rounders All-Ireland Intermediate semi-finals will be hosted by Galway City Rapparees at Coláiste Muire Máthair in Galway City – the second consecutive year All-Ireland knockout fixtures have been staged in the city following a successful Junior hosting in 2025.

GAA Rounders is very grateful to the Board of Galway City Rapparees for allowing us to use their venue and for their assistance and hospitality on the day.

Rapparees also hold two spots in the Junior grade knockout stages on Sunday, 9 August, in Edenderry.

Junior Men

Top of their group with an impressive run rate, captain and pitcher Séamus Keegan leads an unbeaten side into their All-Ireland semi-final against Wexford’s Gusserane. The squad has shown tremendous consistency throughout the campaign and will be aiming to continue that form on Sunday.

Junior Mixed

Drawing from across the club’s growing panel depth, the Junior Mixed team secured their semi-final place with a convincing quarter-final victory over Emo. Captained by Eimear Cuddy, they now face a formidable Inniskeen Grattans side, with pitcher/back catcher pairing Séamus Keegan and Sorcha Dowd hoping to reproduce their excellent quarter-final performance.

Beyond the Pitch

The club’s growth on the scoreboard has been matched by its success away from the playing field. Over the past 12 months, Rapparees players have earned selections for Connacht Interprovincial squads, five Senior Men represented GAA Rounders at the World Games in Waterford, with Tomás Kenny serving as Vice-Captain of one of the Mixed teams, while the club was also named the 2025 Connacht Club of the Year alongside Ili Tuimauga‘s Intermediate Men’s All-Star award.

Galway City Rapparees has also placed a strong emphasis on promoting the game within the local community. Through its standalone club website, regular appearances on Galway Bay FM, coverage in the Galway Advertiser and Connacht Tribune, and an active presence across social media, the club has consistently raised the profile of rounders while attracting new members from a wide variety of backgrounds. That commitment to promotion and community engagement has played a significant role in the club’s remarkable growth over the past five years.

Rapparees is also one of the Association’s most diverse clubs, with players from Samoa, New Zealand, India, Canada, Italy, the United States, the United Kingdom and Ireland. That international experience has enriched the club’s playing style while creating a welcoming environment that reflects the modern face of GAA Rounders.

Members also contribute significantly away from the field, serving across Ard Chomhairle, Coiste na nÓg and the National Referees Panel, helping to develop and strengthen the game nationally as well as locally.

By making the Rapparees an enjoyable and rewarding place to be, we’ve ensured that numbers keep going up, which in turn has transitioned into better teams. We’ve also learned so much each year from playing other fantastic teams, which in turn has allowed us to play and coach our teams better year on year.”

“Running five teams is a huge undertaking. Match days require huge organisation and planning while, behind the scenes there’s training to organise, fixtures to plan and a club of over 50 members to look after. 

When you step back and look at what this club has achieved, though, it’s hard not to feel incredibly proud. Reaching five All-Ireland semi-finals is a remarkable achievement and a credit to every player, coach, volunteer and supporter who has played their part. It’s already been an amazing season, and if we can bring home another All-Ireland title, it would simply be the icing on the cake.”

A Club Built for the Future

As the 2026 Championship reaches its penultimate stages on 9, 15 and 16 August, Galway City Rapparees have firmly established themselves as an integral part of the GAA Rounders community. In just five years, they have grown from a small group of former softball players into a thriving community club competing across five teams at Junior, Intermediate and Senior level.

Whatever the outcome over the coming weeks, the club’s remarkable rise has already left a lasting mark on GAA Rounders. Judging by the progress made since 2021, the next chapter in the Rapparees story promises to be every bit as exciting as the first.

No two days in the Rounders world are ever the same, but some days really are very special. They remind us why we do what we do and what makes the game we all love so wonderful. Thursday, 16 July was one of those days for everyone involved in the GAA Rounders Exhibition Games as part of the GAA World Games.

Back in January, GAA Rounders was invited to be involved in the 2026 GAA World Games, and we jumped at the opportunity to be part of this fantastic collaborative event involving GAA players from all over the world. Although we couldn’t be included in the competitive tournament proper, we submitted a proposal to showcase our sport through three high-calibre Exhibition Games featuring our best players from across the country.

Once the plan was accepted by the World Games Committee, we sent personal invitations to 100 of our 2025 All-Star winners, nominees, and players who narrowly missed out due to injury. An astonishing 70 players accepted, and the real planning began.

After months of hard work, Thursday, 16 July dawned sunny and warm. Fabulous new kits – including specially designed black or white jerseys, teal shorts, and white and teal socks – were generously sponsored by the GAA World Games Committee and gifted to all players. Those involved began arriving from 10.30am and very shortly Pitch 8 at the SETU Arena, Waterford, was buzzing with players looking sharp and ready for action.

 Match Highlights

First to bat were the Celtic Crushers, and right from the start, spectators were treated to impressive catches and sharp base outs from both sides. At the end of the first inning, the score was deadlocked at 2–2. In the second inning, the Crushers settled into a rhythm, bringing seven home to build a 9–2 lead, which they expanded to a 25–13 victory by the fifth inning.

However, the real winner of the match was Rounders itself. Impressive catches from Caroline Waters, Lisa Flood, Aileen Kelly, Katie Groonell, and Chloe Doyle secured key outs, while the teamwork, rock-solid catches, and sharp throws on base from Pamela Brennan, Alisha Reddy, Maggie Brady, and Louise Kelly were fantastic to watch. Pitchers rotated throughout, with Michelle Hopkins, Emma Reddy, Irene Scanlon, and Louise Kelly, all doing themselves and their clubs proud.

A special mention goes to Cúchulainn’s AnnMarie Brennan, who returned from maternity leave – brining baby Oisín along for his very first Rounders event! We were thrilled to have her experience and officiating skill on the pitch.

Player of the Match: Caroline Waters (Cúchulainn) — Chosen by the match officials for her impressive batting and calm, composed catching at Short-stop, which yielded two double outs.

The Bog Warriors batted first, getting off to a flying start with two runners home, but three swift outs from both fielding teams kept the score tied 2–2 after the first inning. The Turf Titans pulled ahead with six runs in the second, leading 12–8 by the fifth inning. This thrilling contest went the full seven innings, with the Turf Titans eventually sealing a 17–13 win.

The quality of play was second to none: breathtaking one-handed catches from Billy Connors and Eddie O’Connor, lightning-fast reflexes from backcatchers Ciarán Weldon and Gary Jordan, and pinpoint pitching from Barry Lambe, Peadar Waters, and Aidan McDonald.

We have to mention Kilmore’s Aidan Carr, a late call-up and the only non-Senior player on either men’s panel. Nobody watching his quality at bat or on the pitch would ever have guessed – his contribution was equal to that of any senior veteran on the field!

Player of the Match: Barry Lambe (Carrickmacross Emmets) — Awarded for a stellar pitching performance, smart tactical batting throughout, and a fantastic Home Run.

 A big thank you to Myshall’s PJ Lalor for officiating a fast-moving, competitive game with great control!

The Skills Challenge

Following the Men’s match, the Skills Games took centre stage. Organised by Peadar Waters and PJ Lalor, five stations tested players’ running, throwing, and pitching accuracy. Station assistance was kindly provided by Caroline Waters, Marion Sheir, Louise Riddell, Lorraine Pugh, and Kamil Walczak.

Special thanks to StrikeZone (Dublin), who brought personnel and specialised equipment to measure the speed of the fastest pitches. The competitive rivalry was high, and the skills showcase proved to be a brilliant addition to the day’s entertainment.

Match Highlights

Our final game highlighted the unique mixed-gender element of adult GAA Rounders – and it certainly didn’t disappoint! Both teams gave their all in a display of speed, dexterity, tactical confidence, and teamwork.

Huge hits straight into outfielders’ hands, rapid infield bunts thrown accurately on the run to base, alert backcatchers pouncing on clips, and tricky pitching that forced hits to go foul: this game truly had it all. Despite being under the beating sun at SETU since early morning, the players brought incredible energy, keeping the pace fierce and competitive until the end.

Backcatchers included Tyra Brennan, Niall Sheehy, Leah Mullins, and Michelle McDonnell, while pitching duties were expertly handled by Ryan Dennis, Danielle Keane, PJ Lalor, and Michael Slevin. In the outfield, Mick Kelly, Kamil Walczak, Justin Perrin, Danny Broderick, and JP Tynan pulled down outstanding catches, backed by stellar infield work from Nakita O’Connor, Gary Boland, Aisling Ginnitty, and Aoife Birney.

Player of the Match: Tomás Kenny (Galway City Rapparees) – honoured for two magnificent catches for outs and excellent, timely batting that advanced teammates and brought runners home.

 Celebrations & Acknowledgments

After nine action-packed hours on Pitch 8 at SETU Arena, it was time to pack up the equipment, load the cars, and head to The Reg in Waterford City for a well-earned evening out. With finger food, great analysis of the day’s play, music provided by DJ Mick Kelly, and brilliant company, it was the perfect end to an unforgettable day.

An event of this scale does not happen without enormous dedication, time, and hard work. While the ultimate reward was a landmark day for our sport, special thanks must be extended to:

Today brings together some of the best rounders players in Ireland for three exhibition matches showcasing the Women’s, Men’s and Mixed games.

The action begins with the Women’s Exhibition Match at 12:00pm, followed by the Men’s Exhibition Match at 2:30pm, before the day finishes with the Mixed Exhibition Match at 5:00pm.These games are all about celebrating the players and the sport. Celebrating Women in Sport Week 2026 | GAA Rounders Mums, Daughters & Sisters

Women in Sport Week 2026 runs from 2–8 March, and GAA Rounders is proud to celebrate the incredible female athletes who shape our game.

With over 60% of our membership female, Rounders truly spans every generation – from U7 Go Games right through to the Senior Women’s All-Ireland Championships. It is a genuine sport for life. Whether you are a lifelong player, returning after a break, or picking up a bat for the first time, there is a place for you in our community.

Our All-Ireland Championships feature dedicated Senior, Intermediate and Junior Women’s competitions. Uniquely within the adult GAA codes, women also compete alongside men in our Mixed Championships, highlighting the inclusivity and skill that define Rounders.

One of the most special sights in our sport is mothers playing alongside their daughters. These role models show that sport does not have an expiry date. By sharing the field, they pass on confidence, leadership and a lifelong love of the game.

While Part 2 will feature the cousins, wives and sisters-in-law who make Rounders a true family affair, today we celebrate some of our standout Mums & Daughters and Sisters.

From Coach to Teammate: Amy won her first All-Ireland Minor medal under her mother’s coaching. Years later their roles evolved into teammates. Lining out together at Senior level, they reached a historic milestone: winning the All-Ireland Mixed title together in 2022. Sharing the pitch, the pressure, and the ultimate victory is a privilege few ever get to experience.

As Pamela emotionally reflects: “When my daughter Tyra moved up through the grades to play beside me on the field – and then win an All-Ireland together – it definitely topped the highlights of our Rounders journey.”

Amy has played alongside her mother, Jen, since the very beginning. Jen is renowned as a powerhouse hitter, often showing the girls exactly “how it’s done,” though Amy is now delivering some massive hits of her own. The family unit is now complete with Katie recently joining her mother and sister on the field.

Leah is a versatile player with a long throw and a talent for pitching, inheriting her mother’s knack for big hits. Her mother, Clare, is the club’s backbone – balancing roles as a selector and coach. Beyond their skills, the duo is famous for bringing the “craic” to every training session.

What began with Karen joining Skryne in 2024 quickly became a full family affair. Her daughter, Hazel, joined later that year, and by 2025 Karen’s sister (and Hazel’s aunt), Sarah, joined the crew to complete the family trio.

Katie & Kirstin Cronin – Elphin, Roscommon

Twins Katie and Kirstin joined Elphin in 2024. “I like playing with my twin because we support one another – she always has my back,” says Katie. Kirstin adds a competitive twist: “We push each other more than anyone. I never want to let her get to the next base, so I work twice as hard to get her out!”

The Gavin sisters play for the reigning Senior Women’s champions, Breaffy. In 2025 they didn’t just win matching All-Ireland medals – they both earned All-Star nominations, Gráinne for Senior Mixed Female Player of the Year and Aileen for Senior Women’s Centre Outfield.

This sister duo is a force to be reckoned with. At the 2024 All-Stars both took home awards: Katie for Senior Female Mixed Player of the Year and Ciara for Senior Women’s Roaming Player. Ciara, now Breaffy’s Club Secretary, says winning those awards together made an already amazing journey even more special.

For Lisa and Lindsey, Rounders is a lifelong story. Both started at ten years old and, despite Lisa’s ten-year detour abroad, they are back playing side-by-side for Erne Eagles.

They were originally inspired by another sister duo – their cousins Rosaleen and Dympna – ensuring the “Eagles” bond stays in the family.”

While they played Community Games as children, these three sisters were never on the same team until now. They represent their club in both Rounders and Camogie.
